October 1-31, 2024: It's the Second Anniversary Community Celebration at Bay Park with special events all month long with nearly 70 FREE and exciting events at The Bay during the park's month-long Second Anniversary Celebration. October 2, 2024: The Phillippi Farmhouse Market is back and it features locally grown fruits and vegetables, including local USDA certified organic produce and hydroponics. October 3, 2024: It's Ringling Underground. October 4, 2024: Do you feel a slight change in the air? Kick off your Fall festivities with Season Four of Fresh Fridays! Celebrate the vibrancy of downtown Sarasota and say farewell to those hot summer months. OctoberFresh will take place on Main Street between Palm and Pineapple Avenue. You will find the stage for the evening adjacent to First Watch Restaurant and a lineup of hospitality vendors placed along lower Main Street! They're kicking off the event year with tasteful bites and beverages from all of your favorite local eateries. Join in for a celebration of Fall with smooth jams and serenades from the highly-requested group Society Hill! October 4, 2024: It's back! The Van Wezel's Friday Fest! Closing out the 2024 Friday Fest season will be Big Night Out, a dynamic variety dance band renowned for their electrifying performances spanning Latin, R&B, and island dance music genres. Led by the commanding vocals of Joni Adno, the band boasts a powerful horn section and grooving conga beats, captivating audiences with their infectious energy. Over the past 17 years, Big Night Out has emerged as one of southwest Florida’s most sought-after dance bands, featuring top-tier musicians from the area. Their versatility shines through as they have entertained crowds at a diverse array of events including weddings, conventions, house parties, galas, neighborhood block parties, and large concerts. With their lively repertoire of party music, Big Night Out promises to be the perfect finale to the concert series, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all attendees. Free admission. October 4, 2024: Lakewood Ranch presents Music on Main the first Friday of each month from 6 p.m.- 9 p.m. Live music, beer, wine and food available. Barktober Fest – Alan Grant Band will fill the air with rock, blues and country and the event will benefit Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue. The street is lined with food vendors, beer trucks, and sponsor booths, as well as rides and activities for the kids. Bring your chairs, but leave coolers at home. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a short leash. Overflow parking is available at the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center. Lakewood Ranch is off University Parkway east of I-75. October 5, 2024: it's the 18th Annual Master Gardener Volunteer Plant Sale and EdFest. At this family-friendly event, choose from among hundreds of shrubs, trees, palms, annuals, herbs and other plant varieties identified as “Florida-friendly” by the University of Florida, and get gardening and landscaping advice from Extension-trained Master Gardener Volunteers. EdFest booths and demonstrations will highlight the array of programs and services offered through Extension, from gardening advice to youth development. October 5, 2024: It's the UF/IFAS Manatee County Fall Plant Sale. Bring beauty and diversity into your landscape with affordable, Florida-friendly plants grown locally by UF/IFAS Extension Manatee County Master Gardener Volunteers (MGV). Guests can get the best selection of plants and beat the rush with early bird tickets. Starting at $10 per person or $15 per family, the early-bird ticket allows access to the plant sale from 8 a.m. to 9a.m. Regular entry begins at 9 a.m. and is free. Only cash or check will be accepted during the sale.  The annual MGV plant sale is a great opportunity for beginner gardeners to get started on their horticultural journey. October 5, 2024 Raise a glass with Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium during Sharktoberfest, a craft beer festival in the Aquarium after hours. The event—on Saturday, October 5, from 7 to 10 p.m.—will feature local and regional breweries that will provide samples of their staple selections alongside unique, seasonal brews. Each guest will receive a commemorative tasting glass for sampling. Sharktoberfest guests will experience Mote Aquarium as they never have before, enjoying live entertainment, food stations, merchandise vendors and special experiences provided by Mote’s Education department. October 5, 2024: It's the return of the Autumn Harvest Dinner at All Faiths Food Bank’s Warehouse. The long-table dinner is part of our Autumn Harvest Campaign, which raises funds for produce programs that provide fresh fruit and vegetables to neighbors struggling with hunger. October 5 - 6, 2024: The 36th Annual Fruitville Grove Pumpkin Fest features hay rides, pony rides, pumpkin painting, face painting, mini train rides, a petting zoo and more. Lots of Halloween decorations for sale, too, from scarecrows to hay bales. Admission, Parking, Petting zoo, playground, live music, and decorated photo spots are FREE! Individual rides and game activity booth, including pony rides, unicorn encounter, hug a goat and pumpkin painting, has their own set price ranging from $1 – $10. Children’s Costume Contest every Saturday at 2 p.m. in front of the animal barn and free to participate in. October 5 - December 1, 2024: Between the colors red and blue lies a range of vibrant hues that makes up the wild and wonderful world of purple. Immerse yourself in purple flowers and foliage at this year’s Orchid Show at Selby Gardens’ Downtown Sarasota campus, showcasing the magnificence and majesty of the royal family of plants. Purple hues are common in the orchid family, found both in naturally occurring species orchids and in human-bred cultivars and hybrids. The prevalence of purple orchid flowers is a testament to the power of their allure for people and pollinators alike. The Orchid Show 2024: PURPLE! will combine a stunning display of purple orchids in the Tropical Conservatory with a dynamic exhibition of botanical prints and photographs in the Museum of Botany & the Arts. October 6, 2024: The Sarasota Firemen's Benevolent Fund will host the 24th Annual Morton's Firehouse Chili Cook-Off features Sarasota firehouses competing for the best chili award. Celebrity judges, live music and more. 1:45 p.m. - 5 p.m. at Morton's Gourmet Market in Southside Village on Osprey Avenue between Hyde Park street and Hillview Avenue. Proceeds benefit the Sarasota Fire Fighters Benevolent Fund, a 501-3c non-profit organization. Free admission. $10 to sample all Chili. October 6, 2024: Check out Parktoberfest at The Bay. Celebrate Oktoberfest – The Bay style! Kick off October with a hoppy twist! No Deutsch required. The DeLeon Family Band returns to The Bay to perform traditional "oompah"-style and a range of other music. Make sure to be a part of the world-famous "Chicken Dance" tradition. Or, compete in the ever-popular Stein-hoisting contest. Or, challenge those you know (or perhaps, those you don't know) to a mean game of cornhole. The Nest Café frigs will be stocked full of must-try German-inspired and locally crafted brews and will be serving tasty brats and soft pretzel sticks with beer cheese. October 9 - 31, 2024: You're invited “Lights at Spooky Point,” which features an array of fantastic creatures and cute creations designed with lights along an eerily lit path through the woods at the preserve and outdoor museum of Historic Spanish Point. Visitors also will see familiar historic sites like Mary’s Chapel and the Pioneer Graveyard in a mysterious (but not too scary) new light during this event for all ages. There will be a one-way path from the Welcome Center Gazebo through several popular areas on the Historic Spanish Point bathed in the glow of orange, purple, and red lights. Along the way, guests will encounter flying “ghost orchids,” webs with “spider orchids,” giant “bat orchids,” vine-twisted skeletons, plenty of pumpkins, and other surprises. This nighttime walk through the woods will finish at a hay maze before guests return to the gazebo to exit. Early Entry 6:30 p.m. | General Admission 7:45 p.m. | Event ends at 9 p.m. Nonmember tickets go on sale Sept. 3, and members tickets go on sale August 28. October 10, 2024: The music program at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will present “A Night at the Movies.” Enjoy iconic movie themes from John Williams, Erich Korngold and other music composers presented by the SCF Bradenton Symphony Orchestra. October 11, 2024: Moved to October 25, 2024. The 22nd annual Goblin Gathering is an event hosted by Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources and held at GT Bray Park. This spooktacular outdoor event is family friendly and fun for all ages! Local businesses will be passing out “treats & sweets” to participants, providing a safe alternative for families to trick-or-treat. This year’s gathering will also feature free access to bounce houses, face painting, costume contests, a petting zoo and magic. Costume contest sign up begins after 5 PM (judging begins at 7:30 PM). Food trucks will be on site to offer a BITE. Costume Contest: 1 year and under,  2 to 4 years old, 5 to 8 years old, 9 and older, Families. Three winners will be chosen for each category. October 12, 2024: Manatee Village Historical Park is hosting “Cemetery Tours,” a free hour-long tour of the 1850 Manatee Burying Grounds led by a member of Manatee Village's staff. Tours cover different facets of life during Manatee's Founding Period (1840-1918) as well as stories of those buried in the burying grounds. Topics vary depending on the staff member leading the tour. Space is limited and filled on a first come, first served basis. All members of your party must be present to receive a wristband. October 17, 2024: Moved to spring 2025. It's the Great American Cleanup!  Keep Sarasota County Beautiful has been granted approval to resume cleanup activities. They will be hosting a "Postponed" Great American Cleanup as KSCB has partnered with Sarasota County's Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources and Libraries and Historical Resources departments to offer new activities to enhance the environmental health and beauty of Sarasota County. In addition to traditional litter removal, there are opportunities to help with other special projects including invasive removal and gardening maintenance at various locations and water based litter removal by kayak. All volunteers MUST individually pre-register to participate by submitting a unique registration form. Currently Lido Beach, Siesta Main Beach and Siesta Key Accesses 5-9 are at full capacity and no longer accepting new volunteers. October 19, 2024: The Newtown Farmers Market in Sarasota hosts the 8th annual Big Mama's Collard Greens Fest. The fest is a celebration of community and culture, with influence from Cajun, Creole, Southern and Caribbean styles. The legendary "big mama" represents the best-tasting family collard greens recipes, some dating back more than 100 years. One of the highlights of the festival is the collard green cook-off, where local residents and restaurant chefs compete for the bragging rights title of “Big Mama” and a chance to win prizes for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place. Competitors cook up batches of their best family collard recipes and submit them for a blind taste test by a judging panel selected by the event planning committee. October 21, 2023: TBA for 2024.  Check out some heavenly bodies during Sidewalk Astronomy courtesy of the local group of Deep Sky Observers as they return with their program. Telescopes will be up and available for public viewing starting at 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. Weather permitting, the members of the Local Group will set up their high-quality telescopes in the parking lot at the southeastern corner of Sarasota's Celery Fields Park. Observing highlights will include the beautiful ringed planet Saturn, giant Jupiter (after about 9:00 p.m.) as well as extraordinary close-up views of the features on our own Moon. Other deep-sky objects, as well as a couple of additional planets will also be featured in the club member’s telescopes. October 25, 2024: The 22nd annual Goblin Gathering is an event hosted by Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources and held at GT Bray Park. This spooktacular outdoor event is family friendly and fun for all ages! October 26, 2024: Manatee Village Historical Park is hosting “Cemetery Tours,” a free hour-long tour of the 1850 Manatee Burying Grounds led by a member of Manatee Village's staff. Tours cover different facets of life during Manatee's Founding Period (1840-1918) as well as stories of those buried in the burying grounds.
