October 4, 2024: It's back! The Van Wezel's Friday Fest! Closing out the 2024 Friday Fest season will be Big Night Out, a dynamic variety dance band renowned for their electrifying performances spanning Latin, R&B, and island dance music genres. Led by the commanding vocals of Joni Adno, the band boasts a powerful horn section and grooving conga beats, captivating audiences with their infectious energy. Over the past 17 years, Big Night Out has emerged as one of southwest Florida’s most sought-after dance bands, featuring top-tier musicians from the area. October 4, 2024: Lakewood Ranch presents Music on Main the first Friday of each month from 6 p.m.- 9 p.m. Live music, beer, wine and food available. Barktober Fest – Alan Grant Band will fill the air with rock, blues and country and the event will benefit Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue. The street is lined with food vendors, beer trucks, and sponsor booths, as well as rides and activities for the kids. Bring your chairs, but leave coolers at home. October 9 - 31, 2024: You're invited “Lights at Spooky Point,” which features an array of fantastic creatures and cute creations designed with lights along an eerily lit path through the woods at the preserve and outdoor museum of Historic Spanish Point. Visitors also will see familiar historic sites like Mary’s Chapel and the Pioneer Graveyard in a mysterious (but not too scary) new light during this event for all ages. There will be a one-way path from the Welcome Center Gazebo through several popular areas on the Historic Spanish Point bathed in the glow of orange, purple, and red lights. Along the way, guests will encounter flying “ghost orchids,” webs with “spider orchids,” giant “bat orchids,” vine-twisted skeletons, plenty of pumpkins, and other surprises. This nighttime walk through the woods will finish at a hay maze before guests return to the gazebo to exit. Early Entry 6:30 p.m. | General Admission 7:45 p.m. | Event ends at 9 p.m. Nonmember tickets go on sale Sept. 3, and members tickets go on sale August 28. This spooktacular outdoor event is family friendly and fun for all ages! Local businesses will be passing out “treats & sweets” to participants, providing a safe alternative for families to trick-or-treat. This year’s gathering will also feature free access to bounce houses, face painting, costume contests, a petting zoo and magic. Costume contest sign up begins after 5 PM (judging begins at 7:30 PM). They will be hosting a "Postponed" Great American Cleanup as KSCB has partnered with Sarasota County's Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources and Libraries and Historical Resources departments to offer new activities to enhance the environmental health and beauty of Sarasota County. In addition to traditional litter removal, there are opportunities to help with other special projects including invasive removal and gardening maintenance at various locations and water based litter removal by kayak. All volunteers MUST individually pre-register to participate by submitting a unique registration form. Telescopes will be up and available for public viewing starting at 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. Weather permitting, the members of the Local Group will set up their high-quality telescopes in the parking lot at the southeastern corner of Sarasota's Celery Fields Park. Observing highlights will include the beautiful ringed planet Saturn, giant Jupiter (after about 9:00 p.m.) as well as extraordinary close-up views of the features on our own Moon. Other deep-sky objects, as well as a couple of additional planets will also be featured in the club member’s telescopes.
